This work was carried out at the same time as the technical lighting for the Monument to the Fallen.

At the request of Brindisi local authority and Chemgas, to better harmonise the monument  lighting with the urban context, we did a study of potential improvements to the public lighting of Santa Teresa Square.

In Puglia, as in many Italian regions, the alignment of energy saving policies of a few years ago coincided with a general (actually, almost across the board) use of High-Pressure Sodium lamps in all sorts of lighting fixture.

Although the technology has clear advantages in terms of light output per watt, the emitted light is of an orangey colour.

This colouration completely changes the urban context, altering the colours of the city in a not altogether aesthetic way and altering what should be an almost natural perception of places.

To avoid having too great an impact on the existing situation, the design was conservative: the existing lighting fixtures were kept unchanged, and only the internal electrical parts were replaced with LED lamps.

However, it was not a mere re-lamping exercise.

Some luminaires were moved, others disposed of. This was in order to re-establish a more natural perception of the surrounding environment.

We also stayed with warm light tonalities because they really helped to enhance the colours of Puglia stones.
